Kathmandu, Nepal – Violent clashes erupted in Nepal's capital on Friday as thousands of pro-monarchy demonstrators gathered to demand the restoration of the monarchy and the re-establishment of Nepal as a Hindu kingdom. The protests, which began peacefully, escalated into violence, prompting authorities to impose a curfew in several areas of Kathmandu.


Casualties and Damage

The unrest resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a journalist covering the event, and left over 45 people injured, including police personnel and protesters. Protesters set fire to vehicles, vandalized buildings, and attacked media houses and political party offices. The Nepal Army was deployed to control the situation, and over 100 agitators were arrested for their involvement in acts of arson and vandalism.


Origins of the Protest

The demonstrations were organized by pro-monarchy activists, including members of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, who have been advocating for the return of former King Gyanendra Shah and the reinstatement of Hinduism as the state religion. The movement gained momentum following Shah's public appeal for support on Democracy Day earlier this year.


Government Response

Authorities imposed a curfew in the affected areas, including Tinkune and Koteshwor, to prevent further violence. Security forces used tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds. The curfew was lifted on Saturday morning as tensions eased, but security remains tight in the capital.


Political Implications

Nepal transitioned from a monarchy to a federal democratic republic in 2008, but dissatisfaction with governance and economic struggles have fueled calls for the monarchy's restoration. The protests highlight deep political divisions within Nepali society, with pro-republican groups also holding counter-demonstrations advocating for the continuation of the republican system.


The situation remains volatile, with authorities closely monitoring potential flashpoints to maintain order and prevent further unrest.
